WindPower Summit APAC

Almost a year ago I started my engagement as Official Representative Singapore for Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC). The task was to bring more visitors to the exhibitions and congresses in Hamburg, especially the two worldwide leading events for maritime, SMM Hamburg, and for wind energy, WindEnergy Hamburg.

Much has happened since then and the work expanded greatly. On the one hand we have additional exciting events in Hamburg, like for the future of ports, all about ports, and the future of security and defence, Global Security and Innovation Summit | GSIS.

On the other hand we are now bringing WindEnergy to Singapore to create a WindEnergy APAC event for the global industry. We will start this year 19 + 20 May 2026, Wind Power Summit Asia-Pacific, https://lnkd.in/ggebP462. HMC is arranging the exhibition together with our local partner, Messe Berlin Asia Pacific, and our partner DN Media Group is organising the two day conference. Next year we will organise it again in Singapore and thereafter alternating with WindEnergy Hamburg.

We already have 27+ exhibitors and 32+ speakers, including Singapore Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology, Tan See Leng. The event focuses on bringing the wind industry forward in APAC. With a diverse economical and regulatory landscape in the different APAC countries the wind industry for the region is shortly before an infliction point for future rapid adoption and growth. The Green Hydrogen Hub Viet Nam at the Vietnamese-German University is a world-class example for the development of the green economy and people in developing countries.

This is a showcase I shared during a roundtable at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference.

* Outside Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, there is the Vietnamese-German University (VGU).
* The university has 2,800 students and the courses take 4 years. It is specialised on engineering, finance, supply chain addressing the high demand and good prospects in these areas.

* GIZ Energy Support Programme - Viet Nam has initiated a programme for the Green Hydrogen Hub Vietnam at the VGU.
* The objectives of the hub are to develop the green hydrogen ecosystem in Vietnam with this centre of excellence for developing skilled workforce, by being a demonstration platform to showcase gH2 technology and by connecting stakeholders.
* Indefol GmbH Group, Siemens, ENERTRAG and TÜV SÜD are some of the founding members. More members from the green hydrogen ecosystem are welcome.
* This hub is an excellent initiative to support the work of the VGU for teaching a skilled workforce. It offers real-life projects and technology experience and connects the students with companies and future employers.
* For example Indefol so far has already taken in two batches of 4 paid intern for 2-6 months and has employed 3 students after they have finished their studies.
* Besides the expertise they are studying other advantages employing the students are that they are good in English and can bridge the knowledge between engineering and commercial aspects.
* Different members of the hub plan to take in more students.

This is a #lighthouseproject of development work. It would be great if similar could be reached - by development institutions and universities - for many other developing countries which also have the potential of renewable energy and people.

I had the pleasure to meet in a mentor session for the SDG Venture Scaler by UNDP and Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP) the Co-Founder and COO of TeenUp, Thu Ha. She is part of a very talented and passionate team dedicated to improving youth wellbeing.

TeenUp is a leading EdTech startup in Vietnam focused on improving teenagers’ emotional wellbeing and soft skills development. They provide a holistic, evidence-based life skills curriculum delivered both in schools and through digital platforms in personal and group coaching, empowering youth and families with tools for resilience, positive communication and stigma reduction. This year’s HamburgAmbassador Meeting was all about food. The food sector is the second biggest in Hamburg. It is not only about culinary excellence and highlights but more and more about innovation, sustainability, urban production and anyway international trade and relations.

At the Food Harbour Hamburg, with which we signed an MOU with Singapore's Nurasa last September, we had a session with different presentations and discussion. Among others, Sascha Taube presented the new Food Cluster Hamburg which already has more than 160 members and shall become an anchor in Europe. Eva Keretic shared her concept of The Future Food Campus Hamburg, an industrial scale next generation urban new food growing and production facility in a circular design. This allows 30 harvests a year instead of 3. Dr. Cornelius Lahme from BLUU Seafood presented their state of the art seafood grown from cells which avoids harm to animals, over-fishing and contamination.

We also visited some very interesting innovation-driven companies: goodBytz which is producing a robotic system as kitchen assistant to automate cooking of meals. And, Ohly which is a leading specialist in yeast for all kinds of food production as well as pharmaceutical developments.

This year the reception with the First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, took place in the City Hall which was very special for all of us. I was surprised and very thankful receiving a bottle ship flying the Hamburg, German and Singapore flag for my 10th anniversary as HamburgAmbassador in Singapore. Thank you very much. Last but not least also a big thank you to Wiete Emskötter and Paula Heine who organised this eventful and remarkable HamburgAmbassador Meeting.

It was exciting to bring the German maritime delegation to see the progress of PSA International's 65 million TEU Tuas Mega-Port. Now berth No. 13 is operative, a bit more than 2/3 of the first phase of total four phases. With the growing port, automation is becoming more and more impressive. This year's Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) was a very engaging and buzzing week. Thank you Eng Dih Teo, Kenneth Lim and the whole Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) team to organise this. 


The German presence and the activities of the whole German maritime community have been very strong as never before in line with SMW's motto "Action meets Ambition". Center point was the first German Pavilion organised by the DMZ, German Maritime Centre. We welcomed Senior Minister of State, Amy Khor, and could share progress on the LOI which was signed between MPA and Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts last September. 


The importance of the maritime industry for Germany was highlighted and represented by Wibke Mellwig and Bjoern Oriwohl from the German Federal Ministry for Digitalisation and Transport. 


With MPA we discussed how to start closer cooperation on the digital side, including training. Also decarbonisation and people development were subjects of the meeting and cooperation in the decarbonisation area like bio fuels shall be explored next. 


In the meeting with Lynn Loo, Dr Sanjay C Kuttan, Grace Lian from the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) the centre's activities for maritime decarbonisation were discussed in-depth. We shall explore what contribution Hamburg stakeholders can make. 


20 maritime companies and organisations were participating in the German Pavilion. For some companies it was the first time in Singapore. Many good meetings and discussions with existing and new partners and customers were held in the pavilion and all over Singapore during SMW. Digital Hub Logistics & Commerce, Mabanaft, NautilusLog, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, HHLA Next, FEHRMANN Tech Group, Lufthansa Industry Solutions, <cargonerds>, CargoKite, heyport, passify, OceanScore, Turtle, Port of Hamburg Marketing, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, Kuehne+Nagel. 


The Hamburg reception has already become a fix event during SMW and we are growing bigger and bigger every year. Thank you Lee Lee Ong for all your work organising this and the delegation. 


SMW has been a good place to meet all the different maritime stakeholders from around the world. The projects and partnerships between organisations and companies from Singapore, Hamburg, and other global maritime partners are now positioned to continue consistently throughout the year.

PIER71™'s Great Circle 2024 showcased the 8 finalists and 12 further semi-finalists of this' year's 8th Smart Port Challenge. These were selected out of more than 200 submissions and 28 shortlisted startups. 14 challenge statements had been made.

The businesses presented show a great variety of innovative solutions for the maritime sector. They range from environmental solutions, digital tools to operational improvements. Many technologies included autonomous or remote water vehicles, for example for cleaning waters or ships, but also to help with saving lives. Others were state of the art wind propulsion, capturing of emissions in the port or recycling offers.

So far more than 140 startups have participated on the PIER71 platform. SMS Amy Khor also mentioned in her keynote speech the new partnership of PIER71 with Digital Hub Logistics & Commerce, Hamburg. At the next Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), we shall bring a bigger delegation of startups and maritime companies from Hamburg and Germany to Singapore.
